Intervention
The Vale Youth Street Team is a partnership project between the Vale of Glamorgan Youth Service and Vibe Experience Ltd. It has the capacity to undertake a variety of youth work methods primarily delivered outside of a building setting and in public spaces. The Vale Youth Street Team operates a planned and committed approach to engaging young people in developmental projects and programmes initiated, sustained and informed by ongoing contact on the streets. The approach is characterised by its:
- Flexibility to assess and target groups most in need or at risk
- Capacity to develop a response independent of provision (if necessary)
- Ability to provide young people with a ‘stepping stone’ to other services
The Vale Youth Street Team will operate using the following methods:-
Detached Youth Work: Delivered by the ‘Pulse’
Mobile Youth Work: Delivered by the ‘V-Pod’
The Vale of Glamorgan Youth Service Pulse Team operates without a centre, working with young people in their own communities. This work is carried out on the street, in parks, in bus shelters, in fact wherever young people are. The basis of the Pulse’s work is a non-judgemental approach to establish contact and to build relationships. This involves constant negotiation by Pulse youth workers to develop positive, supportive and trusting relationship, and a clear understanding of confidentiality. The Pulse also aims to provide opportunities for young people and information around a whole range of issue based topics and aims to meet young people’s needs in a flexible manner outside a youth centre setting.
The V-Pod is a single-decker bus transformed to deliver multi-media activities to young people. The V-Pod is operated by Vibe Experience Ltd, a local voluntary youth organisation in partnership with the councils youth service. On board are the very latest apple i-mac computers, X-Box 360, PS3s, Wii, DJ decks, Bose surround sound, plasma screens, DVD player, disco lighting, chill out space and satellite internet. Professional tutors can run creative, multimedia and music workshops, as well as qualified youth workers providing information and activities on youth related issues. The V-Pod is designed to reach young people living in isolated or vulnerable areas; where there is little or no youth provision, at times and days of most need. |
