Male Victims
The 2007/2008 British Crime Survey found that 15% of victims were men and 85% were women. We do not know how accurate these figures are as men are very reluctant to report Domestic Abuse for many reasons.
Many people believe the myth that Domestic Abuse is mainly about physical violence, however Domestic Abuse is the misuse of power and control against another person and this can manifest itself in different ways. It isn’t about how strong someone is physically.
Male victims in both heterosexual and gay relationships have reported being bullied by their partner, physically and sexually assaulted, had their finances controlled, humiliated and insulted both in private and in front of family/friends. This is domestic abuse, however some men find it hard to identify as they associate abuse with physical violence.
Men’s needs differ to those of women and there are various organisations that acknowledge this and can offer practical & emotional support and there is a refuge available for men and their children.
If you feel that you are being abused, or you are not sure, the best thing you can do is pick up the phone and talk to someone.
